The social benefits of a Syrian family in Vienna caused debate among Austrians. We are talking about a large family that has several monthly social benefits in the total amount of 6000 euros.
The family consists of father, mother and eight children and neither parent is employed. Of the total number of those receiving social assistance in the Austrian capital, 62 percent are foreigners. Earlier, the Minister of Integration, Susanne Raab, who is a member of the Austrian Conservative People's Party (OVP), spoke about the issue of social benefits.
"We need an appropriate form of immigration, which is entry into the labor market, not into the social system. To achieve this, we need to introduce a five-year waiting period before receiving full social assistance. In this way, people will be encouraged to work", Minister Raab said.
The Austrian newspapers "Heute" and "Krone" are among those that reported on the amount of social benefits of the Syrian family. Austrians have considered such sums unacceptable, calling for a revision of the social policy, which they have called "too generous".
"Heute", as a newspaper with a conservative orientation, has questioned the amount of social benefits. Reporting in support of the position that the social benefits are "very generous", "Heute" writes that a worker who comes to Vienna does not earn 6000 euros net per month. For example, as they pointed out, hairdressers earn 1300 euros, while construction workers earn 2100 euros.
What is still controversial is that the amount of social benefits varies significantly from federal province to federal province. The city-province of Vienna, where the Social Democratic Party (SPO) is in power, leads in terms of social benefits.
