Israeli officials said on Monday that Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group had fired "over 5,000 rockets" at northern Israel since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.

Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel a day after the Gaza war broke out, following a Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, AP reports.

Since then, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire, risking the region being pushed into a wider war.

"We will use all necessary means to restore security on our northern border," Israeli government spokesman David Mencer told a news conference on Monday, adding that Hezbollah "bears full responsibility" for the worsening situation. of security.

Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets into northern Israel on Wednesday, hours after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior commander, the group's most senior member to die in eight months of fighting.

Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed ally of the Palestinian group Hamas, has recently attacked further inside Israel and introduced new and more advanced weapons.

Its officials say they will stop the attacks only if there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

Mencer also spoke about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to dissolve the cabinet tasked with leading the war in Gaza.

The War Cabinet was dissolved following the departure from the government of Benny Gantz, an opposition lawmaker who had joined the coalition in the early days of the war.
