China on Thursday announced sanctions against two US companies for what it said were support for arms sales to Taiwan.

The companies "General Atomics Aeronautical Systems" and "General Dynamics Land Systems" have had their assets frozen in China. The measures also bar the management of these companies from entering China, the AP reported.

It is not known exactly what assets the companies have in China, which depends on foreign aerospace technology even as it tries to establish its own presence in the field.

Taiwan is a self-governing island but claimed by China, which views it as a breakaway province. While the US maintains what it calls a "strong, unofficial relationship" with Taiwan, it has formal diplomatic relations with China, not Taiwan. However, for the US, Taiwan is one of the main allies in Asia.
