Three girls have lost their lives while 16 other people managed to escape after a boat carrying migrants collided with rocks on the eastern Greek island of Chios.

Greek officials have announced that 14 people, including two men, four women and eight children, have been rescued by the coast guard in an area in the northeast of the island, about 20 kilometers from the Turkish coast.

Two other men were also found on the shore.

Coast Guard officials told The Associated Press that three of its patrol vessels went out to the area to search for other possible survivors, while the boat is believed to have sunk.
