At least 29 people have died as a result of a fire that broke out during renovation work at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, state media reported on Tuesday.

Eight other people were injured, seven of them in serious condition, the Istanbul governor's office said, CNN reported.

According to the office, the fire started in the Beskitas region, in central Istanbul, in the European part of the city, and that all the victims are construction workers.

The fire broke out during renovations in the building, which is located underground, according to Anadolu, the Turkish state news agency.

Authorities have said they have issued arrest warrants for five people, including three people who managed the nightclub, and another responsible for the renovation.
