In Greece, a 50-euro fine for unvaccinated citizens over 60 years old

Greece has decided as of today to fine all people over 60 years old who have not been vaccinated for COVID-19, while they must pay 100 euros every month until they are immunized, the AP agency reported.

Greece's decision comes as national immunization is below the EU average and due to an increase in the number of patients seeking hospitalization.

About two-thirds of Greece's population of 10.7 million are fully vaccinated, while the average for EU countries is over 70 percent, which puts Greece at the bottom of the list.

"The age factor is important because of the impact on public health", said the Minister of Health of Greece, Tanos Plevris.

According to Government data, only 41 percent of about 530 citizens over the age of 60 are fully vaccinated.

In fact, last year Greece made the vaccination of health workers mandatory, while at the end of December, also for the over 60 age group.
