At least 11 people have died and five others were injured in India after they were hit by a train while trying to escape from the train they were on, following rumors of a fire on board.
Railway officials said passengers had disembarked from the train in Mumbai in the western state of Maharashtra after someone sounded the emergency signal, causing it to stop, the BBC reports.
They were hit by a train on another track, trying to escape.
India has embarked on a $30 billion program to modernize its railways in recent years, but this has been marred by a series of accidents, including a major three-train collision in 2023 in the state of Odisha, which left nearly 300 people dead.
