Von der Leyen: With or without the US, we cannot let Russia win

The European Union cannot allow Russia to win the war in Ukraine, regardless of what happens in the United States after the presidential elections, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday, Euronews reported.

In front of the deputies of the European Parliament, Von der Leyen said that Europe does not have the luxury of comfort regarding this issue.

"We are not in control of elections or decisions in other parts of the world. We simply do not have time to sidestep the issue. With or without the support of our partners, we cannot let Russia win. The cost of uncertainty - the cost of a Russian victory - is much greater than any savings we can make now", she said.

Her request follows comments made by Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner, who openly said he would "encourage Russia to do whatever it wants against NATO countries that fail to meet their defense spending."

In her speech in Strasbourg, Von der Leyen said that Europe has been living under the illusion that peace is permanent.

"The continent must be ready for war. The threat of war may not be imminent, but it is not impossible," she added.
