In 2020, the number of electric cars in the member countries of the European Union exceeded one million. According to data from the EU Statistics Office (Eurostat), this is 20 times more than the number recorded in 2013 and three times more than in 2018.
As further stated, the highest growth rates of electric cars were recorded between 2019 and 2020 (+83 percent) and between 2018 and 2019 (+64 percent). In 2020, the total number increased from 0.02 percent to 0.4 percent.
"The fleet of electric vehicles in almost all EU member states has grown in the last five years, reaching a total of 250 million vehicles in 2020," according to Eurostat.
For 30 years, Luxembourg has held the record among EU member states. The highest rate of the number of cars per thousand inhabitants. In 2020, this reached 682 cars per thousand inhabitants. Followed by Italy (670), Poland (664) and Finland (652).
A low rate was registered in Romania (379 cars per thousand inhabitants), despite the increase in the number of cars registered in the period 2015-2020 (+41 percent), Hungary (403) and Bulgaria (414).
