Opel will stop production of its flagship model, the Insignia, this year, a company spokesman confirmed to German media on Monday.
The end of the Insignia's production comes earlier than originally planned, as regular production was expected to end in 2024.
Following the discontinuation of the Insignia, the plant in Rüsselheim will be fully used for the production of the Opel Astra and its sister model, the DS 4.
"Opel plans to switch to an all-electric range by 2028 and is preparing to launch several more advanced electric models. The current Opel Insignia was launched in 2017 on a platform that was not designed for electrification. As a result of CO2 regulations and the focus on increasing production of three new models in Rüsselheim - Opel Astra, Astra Sports Tourer and DS4 - production of the Insignia will end this year," the company said in a statement.
As an indirect replacement for the Insignia, an electric crossover/SUV can be expected. /autoblog
