On Friday, December 8, the speed limit on most roads in Amsterdam will be reduced to a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour. In recent days, competent services have prepared the city for this change, fixing road signs and placing nearly 4400 new signs.
From December 8, 80 percent of Amsterdam's roads will have a speed limit of 30 km/h. The maximum speed will be clearly indicated on every road with road signs.
The first signs on the future roads where the limit will be 30 km/h started to be placed last Monday.
Authorities are aware that it will take time for drivers to get used to the new restrictions, but stress that slower driving will ensure safer and more relaxed travel for everyone.
"As a driver, you will have a better view and be able to react faster to unexpected situations. At 30 km/h, the braking distance is 13 meters, less than half of that at 50 km/h (27 meters). With the maximum speed of 30 km/h we expect 20 to 30 percent fewer serious accidents. The probability that a pedestrian will survive an accident in which a car was traveling at a speed of 30 km/h is 95 percent. In the coming weeks, additional signage will be placed on roads where the speed limit will remain at 50 km/h to make it clearer which limit applies where.
