A group of prisoners in the Macedonian prison of Idrizova tried to escape through the opening of a tunnel, the Macedonian Ministry of the Interior announced.
According to reports, a group of at least eight inmates planned to escape from Macedonia's largest prison through a tunnel they dug. The tunnel is about 40 meters long. The Ministry of the Interior adds that after learning that the group was planning the escape, it carried out criminal-operational verification actions and submitted the information and results to the relevant directorate.
The Directorate, it is said, checked the site marked as a potential tunnel and found the tunnel about 40 meters long. The tunnel is located next to the facility that was used to store coal at a depth of about one meter and a diameter of about 80 centimeters.
"In the tunnel, several plastic baskets were found in which ropes were tied, which were used to extract the excavated soil, and an electric cable with a lamp that was used to light the tunnel," according to the police.
The Kumanovo Group, which consists mainly of Kosovo Albanians, is also serving its sentence in Idrizova prison. Some members of the Kumanovo Group have been sentenced to life imprisonment and some to 40 years in prison for the crime of "terrorism" in 2017.
