The status of the victims of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo was belatedly recognized. As a category of war, they were introduced into the law in 2014. But apart from a pension of 230 euros, victims of sexual violence do not enjoy many benefits that other categories of war enjoy.
The victims, as well as the organizations that represent them, have requested that they also have other benefits, such as free health services. The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare has not indicated the reasons why this category is excluded from the benefit of some other benefits, which from 2011 benefit the other categories of the war, Koha Ditore writes today.
According to the current law, victims of sexual violence have the right to benefit from health services abroad, but only if the illness they have is related to the violence they suffered 20 years ago. Also, based on the Law on Health Insurance, which is still not implemented, they are exempted from paying insurance premiums, but only in cases where they are a poor category, and they are excluded from this category by the very fact that they receive a 230 euro pension.
"I have some health problems and I don't even know why I can't be checked by a doctor for free, I also asked for clarification from non-governmental organizations and they told me that it is regulated by law, we don't even know where to turn." said a victim of sexual violence during the war. According to her, it would be good for them to be able to perform these services within Kosovo and free of charge.
"We have suffered enough now even to pay, we don't have the conditions, we have many problems", she said.
Such complaints have also been reported in non-governmental organizations that deal with the treatment of victims of sexual violence.
