At the age of 84, Mexhit Haziri, a renowned veteran of education and sports in the Municipality of Gjilan, died on Wednesday morning.
Haziri was a physical education professor and for many years the principal of the primary school in Zhegër, which was once named "Bashkimi" and after the war "Agim Ramadani".
He was the initiator of the founding of the "Zhegra" football club in 1958, and ten years later he was also the founder and member of the "Zhegra" handball club.
After the war, he continued to support sports, putting his professional and organizational experience to work for the handball club that competed in the Kosovo Super League for nearly 10 years.
Haziri is most deserving of the fact that in the 70s and 80s, Zhegra was also distinguished for its rich cultural activities. He contributed to the functionalization of the House of Culture, which later became the permanent home of the "Idriz Seferi" artistic society, as well as the home of a cinema, a library and a preschool institution. In the years of the struggle for emancipation, he was committed to improving the infrastructure and health services, public transport and telecommunications, transforming Zhegra into an urban locality.
His over 60 years of activity has made him one of the most prominent activists not only in the Municipality of Gjilan.
In honor of his work, a memorial service will be held on Thursday at noon. An hour later, the funeral ceremony will take place.
