Ukshini: With these elections, Albania has come closer to the threshold of the EU

Syle Ukshini

Former Kosovo ambassador to Albania, Sylë Ukshini, estimates that with the recent elections held over the weekend, Albania has come closer to the threshold of the European Union.

Edi Rama is expected to receive a fourth term as Prime Minister of Albania. His Socialist Party is clearly leading.

"Within Albania's standards, as friends from Albania told me, these are the best elections ever made. An extremely good plus on Albania's path to European integration. It is on the threshold towards the European Union with these elections," Ukshini said on KTV's "Interaktiv".

Ukshini said that Rama's fourth term is not good for democracy.

"It certainly doesn't do democracy any good," Ukshini said.

Ukshini said that Rama has reformed the Socialist Party to an extraordinary extent.

"He conveyed in the best way the entire body of politicians from the time of Fatos Nano, in the sense of telling them 'open your arms'," said Ukshini.

Ukshini said that the Socialist Party in the future risks suffering like the Democratic Party of Albania, when Rama's term ends.

"We can say that Rama is now without a successor in the party," said Ukshini.

Ukshini: Sali Berisha belongs to history, but he failed to discipline himself

As for the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, Ukshini said that he belongs to history and failed to discipline himself.

"I think Sali Berisha belongs to history. He has merit and an important chapter in the history of the Albanian transition. But, sometimes, as philosophers say, defeating oneself is a problem. He has not managed to discipline himself, his ambitions," said Ukshini.
