Students at UP are also forced to learn Serbian literature

The non-use of basic literature in the Faculty of Natural Mathematical Sciences of the University of Pristina is forcing students to learn with literature in the Serbian language.

KOHA has provided images of some books in the Serbian language through which students claim that they are taught in the direction of Financial Mathematics within the framework of FSHMN.

Student Blerina Selmani says that this is causing difficulties for them, because the vast majority do not have knowledge of the Serbian language.

"Students are forced to find literature in foreign languages, not in Albanian. While there are none in the Albanian language, they are all in different languages, mainly English, Serbian and other languages. It is very difficult, because if you translate it in 'google', the contexts are not the same as they are in the corresponding language", said Selmani.

In a written response to KOĖN, the dean of FSHMN, Idriz Vehapi, said that the deans are not aware that this problem exists.

According to him, the Student Council has not presented any concerns of this nature.

"Regarding the eventual concerns of the students regarding the literature, let me inform you that we, as deans of FShMN (up to this moment), have not been approached by anyone about such a possible problem. In this context, it is important to emphasize that we, as the management of FShMN, hold periodic (weekly) meetings with the heads of departments, where we discuss in detail all the issues related to the teaching process, nor in these meeting, such a concern has never been addressed", said Vehapi.

According to him, the Student Council (which is also represented in the FShMN Council), has not presented any concerns of this nature.

"Regarding the literature, the professors, during the compilation of the course syllabuses, specify the basic literature as well as the additional (obligatory) literature, with which the students are served in the preparation of the exams. Such syllabi are presented in the first week of the commencement of classes (where students can also address/discuss their eventual concerns)," he said.

Arbër Gashi, a student at the University of Pristina, has mentioned several subjects where, according to him, the literature of the Serbian language is used.

He says that they are not against this literature, but according to him, it should be translated into Albanian.

"In the directions, especially in faculties such as FSHMN, in the Technical Faculty and in the Faculty of Medicine, where the basic literature in some subjects is given in the Serbian language, such as in the Faculty of Medicine in the subject of pathophysiology and in the FSHMN in the direction of Mathematics, a part of the basic literature is given in the Serbian language, as well as in the Technical Faculty, in the subject of Soil Mechanics it is given in the Serbian language. We are not against Serbian literature, but why don't our professors translate them", said Gashi.

The representative of the student organization "Study, Criticism, Action" said that as an organization they asked the UP to find mechanisms to fix such a thing.

"Literature often happens that it is not in the Albanian language, in the best case it is in the English language, but there are cases when it is in the German language and in the Serbian language that very few students have knowledge of these two languages...00:57 UP should have a publishing house of its own because of the translation of literature and because of other literature", said Altin Mehmetaj from SKV.

KOHA has sent questions to the Faculty of Medicine and the Technical Faculty, but has not received an answer.
