The European Union's envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sorensen, has stressed the importance of clarifying the fate of persons missing during the war in Kosovo, describing this as a humanitarian necessity.
"Families still waiting to learn about their loved ones deserve clarity and justice. Therefore, the issue of missing persons remains a priority for me in the dialogue," Sorensen wrote in "X" after a visit to the Institute of Forensic Medicine on Wednesday.
According to the Red Cross, there are over 1.600 people missing from the 1998/99 war in Kosovo - most of them Albanians.
Kosovo and Serbia have repeatedly held each other responsible for the lack of progress in the search for the missing.
Kosovo and Serbia reached a Joint Declaration on Missing Persons in 2023.
However, the commitments it includes - such as full access to reliable information, making available all documents relevant to determining the fate of missing persons, and working together through an EU-led commission - have remained unimplemented by Serbia.
