Professor of international law, Besfort Rrecaj, has said that the visit of the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard R. Verma, reaffirms the commitment of the United States of America to Kosovo.
On Friday, Verma stayed in Pristina where he had meetings with President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
Rrecaj said that his visit is of special importance.
"The extremely important visit that reaffirms the American commitment towards Kosovo and the strengthening of long-term relations, in the sense of Kosovo's aspirations for a strategic partnership with the USA and the creation of a special relationship. It reaffirms in this whirlwind of international problems the American commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans", he said on KTV's "60 Minutes".
For the Strategic Dialogue between Kosovo and the USA, for which President Osmani announced that they will sign it soon, Rrecaj stated that he intends to initiate certain political and economic developments in accordance with the values of the USA.
"Such dialogues, the USA has with many other countries. It signed with North Macedonia in 2022. These strategic dialogues seek to strengthen and promote certain political and economic developments in the world in accordance with the values that the USA protects. In this respect, I expect that this dialogue will focus on three or four main pillars which are defined like other countries. The first pillar is the embrace of the values that the US and the liberal-democratic world uphold, that focuses on the rule of law and human rights, free market economy. The economic pillar... in the framework of policies, the state is seen more as a regulator and not an actor that is directly involved in the economy. The other pillar related to security policies and so on", added the professor.
Regarding relations between Kosovo and the USA under the Kurti Government, Rrecaj has stated that America sees international relations between peoples and not between governments. He does not expect that there will be "radical changes in the US policy towards Kosovo under the Trump administration.
"There may be changes in the means to achieve certain goals. In terms of its purpose, I don't believe there will be a radical change in American policy, both in Kosovo and in crises around the world", said Rrecaj.
