"Qika" with a symbolic action for March 8: Due to the pandemic, violence against women increased, many jobs were lost

The Center for Information, Criticism and Action (Qika) has held a symbolic action to mark International Women's Day, in front of the Kosovo Government building, Ekonomia Online reports.

According to the organizers, the position of women has become significantly more difficult due to the crisis brought about by the pandemic.

According to them, data at the global level show that a large number of women have lost their jobs, another part of them have been victims of domestic violence, and most women were faced with heavy burdens with housework, which are unfairly seen as "women's work".

Leonita Mulliqi, QIKA representative, said that housework has remained a natural obligation for women due to the traditional division of roles.

"Cooking, ironing, supplying and cleaning, all the other similar jobs take up most of the women's time during the day. "Being economically dependent on the men of the family, women are forced to serve food and wash dishes and clothes for it, all this great work that women do is seen as their natural obligation due to the traditional division of gender roles." she said.

The representative of QIKA also mentioned the cases of property division, where according to her, this is being denied to women both by her family and by the person they marry.

"Housework has historically been undervalued and in fact continues to not even be recognized as work. In this way, women are not only exploited, but their commitment is not even appreciated. In cases of division of property, both in the father and in the husband, women are considered as strangers. They are not entitled to property, because their work is not recognized," she said

After the overthrow of the table set by them, Mulliqi said that the gender roles should be overthrown in the same way as this table today.
