Pupovci: Education in Kosovo needs revision of textbooks and addition of inspectors

IDeputy Minister of Education, Dukagjin Pupovci, has stated that the revision of textbooks and the increase in the number of educational inspectors would have a positive effect on increasing the quality of education in Kosovo.

Commenting on the European Union's report on education in Kosovo, Pupovci said on Thursday that the report is a signal for Kosovar society and the competent bodies to mobilize to improve quality.

"This is a signal to mobilize as a society and also the competent bodies, starting from the Ministry of Education and the schools to improve the quality of education, since quality is the center of attention. We are aware that we are not managing to address this properly", said Pupovci on KTV's "60 Minutes".

Pupovci has stated that the EU is asking for textbooks to be replaced and to include a system to ensure that the textbooks are free of major errors. Speaking about education inspectors, Pupovci added that Kosovo has only 21 of them, and that according to him this number is very low.

"We have 21 education inspectors, while we have about 23.000 teachers. The number of inspectors has decreased rapidly and the competition for the employment of inspectors is failing twice. If we do not build the capacities to have 100 inspectors to carry out these works, that measure cannot be implemented. Every year over 6 million euros are allocated for this, but it is the second year that that money has not been spent", he said.

According to an expert on education issues in Kosovo, there are people interested in the job of education inspector, but this is failing "due to administrative errors".

He said that in today's conditions, every classroom in Kosovo should have computers, projectors and other equipment such as maps, globes to make knowledge concrete.
