Profile of Hashim Thaçi

Hashim Thaçi - one of the main people of the most important events in Kosovo during and after the war.

His journey towards this began with involvement in the Kosovo People's Movement to become one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. To then take on the role of the political representative of the KLA.

Known by the nickname "Snake", he provided weapons and financial means for the KLA. Until in 1997, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the District Court of Pristina, as Kosovo was part of the former Yugoslavia, under charges of terrorism.

However, it was precisely in the 97s when Thaçi began to be "empowered" politically. During this time, he became part of the Kosovar delegation in Rambuje where he took the leading role.

He was also seen as the "voice of reason" by foreign diplomats, since he agreed with the idea of Kosovo being an independent autonomy within the former Yugoslavia.

After the war his political influence faded, Thaçi led the Democratic Party of Kosovo as the opposition in UNMIK-administered Kosovo.

Thaçi remained in this position until the November 2007 elections.

The PDK came first in the national elections with over 34% of the votes, opening the way for him to the post of Prime Minister.

After many developments, Hashim Thaçi sat in the chair of the first executive in January 2008.

As the new prime minister, he declared that the institutions of Kosovo will function throughout the territory of Kosovo in cooperation with the international community and that there will be no annexation of the country.

Immediately after a month, once again, Thaçi was in the center of attention, local and international.

On February 17, as Prime Minister, he read the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo, even though later it was said that this was planned in principle to be done by the Speaker of the Assembly, Jakup Krasniqi.

About three years later, the Government of Kosovo, led by Thaçi, took the first step, which was required by the international community, the normalization of relations with Serbia, the beginning of the dialogue process.

Even in this case, showing the protagonism since he came to the head of the government, Thaçi himself took the main role.

That same year, while the then prime minister was being congratulated by the international community for his "correct" actions, European Council Rapporteur Dick Marty accuses Thaci of war crimes.

In Marty's report, it was stated that the "Drenica Group" in which Hashim Thaçi was a member together with other members of the KLA in the "Yellow House" in Burrel have carried out operations to develop the smuggling of human organs. Marti explained that the victims were Serbs and Roma.

Immediately after that, with 166 votes in favor, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe approved the resolution that sought to investigate the crimes that Dick Marti claimed were committed by the former prime minister of Kosovo, Thaçi and others.

This also led to the establishment of the Special Court, which Thaçi himself gave the main impetus to its establishment, although in the end the institution of justice operating in The Hague withdrew from the accusation of organ trafficking, on the grounds that no evidence was found for this.

However, after all the procedures were completed and the Court became functional, Thaçi withdrew, becoming active in the attempts to abolish it.

Thaçi gave up the leadership of the PDK in 2016, becoming a presidential candidate.
