VV's pressure on the president through the Law on Elections

The initiative of the Vetëvendosje Movement to change the Law on Elections on the very day when it is expected to vote for the election of the president, is being seen as pressure on other parties that the country will go to new elections if Vjosa Osmani is not elected president.

Already, in the meeting of the Presidency of the Assembly, the amendment of the Law on Elections with the initiative of the Vetëvendosje Movement is being discussed. This initiative was made public immediately after the information that the extraordinary session for voting for the president can be held on Friday afternoon.

Eugen Cakolli from KDI sees this initiative as wrong for two reasons. According to him, firstly, it is being done without consultation with the opposition and secondly, it is contrary to the Code of Good Practice in Electoral Matters.

On the other hand, the political analyst, Imer Mushkolaj, has described the urgency of changing the Law on Elections shortly before the presidential vote as blackmail.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti also mentioned the new elections to the opposition parties on Friday.

"When the Government changes, the approach and strategy change, and then there are the consequences. The problems we have in the energy sector are inherited, but we will fix them. We cannot solve the mistakes of a few years ago either this week or next week, otherwise we will go to the elections", stated Kurti in response during the plenary session in the Assembly of Kosovo.

The VV had stated earlier that among the steps it would take in the Assembly would be to change the law, especially because it had to do with the voting process of the diaspora for the elections in Kosovo. The diaspora should vote in the embassies and consulates of Kosovo in the countries where they live, was the party's position.

But today, when the president is expected to be voted on, as two opposition parties have officially declared that they will not participate in the vote and the quorum for voting for Osmani the president is in question, the Parliament initiated the amendment of the Law on Elections.

VV's candidate, Vjosa Osmani, needs 80 votes to be elected as head of the state, but it is not certain whether she will secure that number since the session is held today. If in the two rounds of voting she does not manage to get 2/3 of the votes of the deputies, in the third she needs 61 votes, with the condition that 80 deputies participate in the voting, Koha reports. It is not known whether the deputies of the Serbian List will participate in the vote. According to the Constitution, there must be at least two candidates for president. In this case, Osman's opponent is Nasuf Bejta, who has said that he is running only to help the process.

In case Osmani does not vote, the country goes to elections again.

Hundreds of ballots from the diaspora were invalid in the February 14 elections, CEC data revealed. The VV actually said that the large number of invalid votes from the diaspora is evidence that the process of voting from abroad must be changed. With the amendment of the Law on Elections, expatriates can be given the opportunity to vote through embassies and consulates in the countries where they live, without spending and with less chance that the ballots will be considered invalid.

The head of the Parliamentary Group of the VV, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, has said that the issue of the Law on Elections is the only issue in the Presidency and that depending on the deadlines, the election of the president will proceed. "If it ends in a few hours, that for the legislative initiative, depending on the will of the deputies to stay in the hall, we will also proceed with the election of the president", she said.

Vetëvendosje and Osmani received over 14 percent of the votes in the February 50 elections. In the diaspora they received over 70 percent.
