Tomorrow the Parliament of Spain will consider the initiative of the parliamentary group of the Catalan separatists Junts which demands "recognition of the Republic of Kosovo as a sovereign state by the state of Spain".
"The Congress calls on the Government to recognize the Republic of Kosovo as a sovereign state", says the proposal of the initiative of the deputies of the party founded by the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, wrote the Serbian medium Novimagazin.
The explanation of the initiative that was published in the official newspaper of the parliament says that Kosovo is "a state in the Western Balkans with an Albanian Muslim majority, a legal and democratic state with about 1.7 million inhabitants that declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and is recognized as a state of independent from 104 out of 193 countries".
Recalling the statement of the Spanish Government in October 2021, that "Spain remains of the position that it does not recognize the unilateral declaration of independence" of Kosovo because it is a "unilateral act", the deputies of this group emphasize that "it is time to made significant efforts to resolve the Kosovo issue within the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina with an agreement in accordance with international law".
"Spain's refusal to recognize a state that has exercised its legitimate right to self-determination is an obstacle to the European policy of including the Western Balkans in the EU and a destabilizing factor in the region in a context marked by the war in Ukraine, which this part of Europe perceives it with particular concern," the explanation continues.
In this sense, it is emphasized that "it is not acceptable for the Spanish state to share the same strategy of refusing to recognize Kosovo, as Russia, China or Belarus"

The explanation recalls that from January 2024, Spain has the obligation to recognize Kosovo's passports in accordance with the EU regulation with which "this Balkan country joined the short-term visa waiver regime in the Schengen area", and that it already has indirect relations with Kosovo because the EU has signed the Stabilization-Association Agreement with Kosovo, which means different types of relations with the member states.
The Junts parliamentary group considers it "necessary to recognize Kosovo as a sovereign state, as this would express support for the resolutions of the European Parliament, and especially the last two from 2023 in which they require the five EU member states, which have not done so, recognize Kosovo and allow it to move forward on the European path without further delays under the same conditions as other candidate countries".
