European Parliament urges EU to lift measures on Kosovo

Kosovo EU

Tomorrow, the draft report on Kosovo, prepared by Riho Terras, who is the new European Parliament rapporteur for Kosovo, will be presented to the European Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee.

This draft report assesses Kosovo's commitment to integrating into the European Union, a commitment that also reflects the clear geopolitical goal and the strong support of Kosovo's citizens.

It is also said that Kosovo's future lies in the European Union and efforts to bring Kosovo out of a gray area are in the common interest of both Kosovo and the European Union.

Therefore, this draft report also supports Kosovo's application for membership in the European Union and reiterates the invitation for European Union member states that have not recognized Kosovo's independence to do so without further delay.

This call is always repeated by the European Parliament in reports and resolutions on Kosovo, but member states have so far ignored such a call. This draft report once again demands that the European Union lift the measures it has imposed on Kosovo.

"We call for the immediate lifting of restrictive measures against Kosovo, which are no longer justifiable and are in contradiction with Kosovo's proven commitment to European values and alignment with EU policy," the draft report states.

The European Parliament also supports Kosovo's application for membership in the Council of Europe and Kosovo's intention to also become part of NATO's Partnership for Peace.

This document expresses concern about the security situation in northern Kosovo, especially after the terrorist attack in Banjska in September 2023.

Concern is expressed over the fact that Serbia has not yet brought the perpetrators of this terrorist attack to justice.

including the former deputy president of the Serbian List, Milan Radovićić, who is primarily responsible for these attacks.

The draft report also expresses support for the dialogue process for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo and welcomes the appointment of Peter Sorensen to the post of special envoy for dialogue.

Kosovo, like Serbia, is invited to refrain from unilateral actions that could create tensions and also to approach the dialogue process constructively.
