Patients are forced to buy their own materials for surgery at UCCK

Due to a lack of materials, patients at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo are being forced to cover their own costs for surgical interventions. The institutions do not provide answers to the reasons for the lack of surgical kits and some medications for treatment.

If undergoing surgery at the University Clinical Center, patients must also purchase the surgical set.

This includes, among other things, scalpels, surgical scissors, tweezers, syringes and needles, as well as sterile bandages.

Because they were asked last week to purchase two surgical sets for surgery as well as a microscope bag, the patients also documented this through medical prescriptions.

"We stayed in the hospital for about three weeks. To buy, we bought some injections that we sent in the photo, which were not here. We also bought a bag for the microscope, and some clothes or I don't know what they were for beds... The injections cost somewhere around 23.80 an injection that we had to buy for a week or so. Even the microscopic bags and those I don't know what they were cost 130 euros..... We don't regret buying them because their behavior is very good and it's not the doctors' fault that these things are missing here," said a patient.

Despite this, most patients who report a lack of medicines at UCCK prefer to remain anonymous.

Two days ago, KOHA also broadcast complaints from other patients who were forced to buy their own equipment for surgery. And today, patients or their families have testified through medical prescriptions, the request to purchase a type of antiepileptic and two chemotherapy drugs.

UCCK has not responded to the lack of surgical kits and has not indicated whether all clinics where surgical procedures are performed have such shortages.

Approximately 70 surgeries are performed per day in this institution.

KOHA has also sent questions to the Ministry of Health about the lack of material for operations, as well as the lack of medicines. It has also requested a list of medicines that are missing due to delayed delivery and those that are missing due to lack of contracts. But the Ministry has not responded.

On Tuesday, KOHA directly asked the Minister of Health about the complaints of patients who are obliged to buy essential medicines. He said that he has no answer to this.
