Osmani for Columbia University: I am categorically against any territorial change

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, expressed her strong opposition to the idea of changing the borders on Wednesday, in a teleconference organized by Columbia University.

"I am categorically against any kind of territorial change. On the other hand, regarding reciprocity - this is a principle which has a very simple meaning: it is equality. Every state that has recognized the independence of Kosovo, based on the principle that Kosovo is a sovereign country, must at the same time believe in the principle of equality between Kosovo and Serbia", she said, according to the press release. of the Speaker.

Present at the teleconference were various political actors and analysts, organized by the Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR), which is part of Columbia University in the USA.

The topic has been the political aspects of the current situation, such as the tariff towards Serbia, dialogue and reciprocity.

Osmani has made a retrospective look at the history of the state of Kosovo, from the time when it was part of the dialogue with Serbia since 2006, until the involvement of the EU and the USA in this topic.

According to her, the dialogue with Serbia, started in 2010, has not produced results, which are in the spirit of declaring Kosovo independent.

"The way the dialogue was shaped and led, and what it produced, was not in line with what the intentions of those who declared independence were, and it certainly was not in line with the concepts surrounding the declaration of independence. , which is the will of the people", said Osmani.

According to her, the current format of the dialogue aims to please Serbia. "So for a long time I have insisted that we have to change that way because if we continue like that, we will end up crippling Kosovo not only in territorial terms but also in relation to its sovereignty and its capacities. to develop and stand on its feet as an independent and sovereign country", said Osmani. In this context, she drew attention to the lack of key principles in the dialogue.

"What we have repeatedly said is that we return to the dialogue table if 1) the two sides are treated as equals, and 2) issues related to territorial integrity, sovereignty, and constitutional order are not discussed, since, if the all of it is placed on the table, and used to reach a compromise, then it will send us to the situation before the declaration of independence, which would not be acceptable for the citizens of Kosovo", emphasized Osmani.

Furthermore, Osmani said that the 33 signed agreements, 90 percent of them have not been implemented by Serbia.

"I come from Mitrovica, and if you go and talk to the citizens there, in any part, north or south, and ask them how much these agreements have affected their lives, you will get very few positive answers from them" , Osmani said.

For this reason, she said that the dialogue needs guiding principles that are based on the stability of the region.

"We know that this issue will open Pandora's box and now there are many different voices who are saying that we will not divide all the territory up to the part of the Ibri River bridge, but we will divide it somewhere else higher , we'll already get some parts of Leposavič and Zubin Potok, but it's all the same since you're opening the box. And when he opens it, you can never know where it ends", said Osmani.
