Osmani in Lithuania: Kosovo should be supported with an accelerated process for membership in NATO

Vjosa Osmani at the conference in Lithuania

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, during a joint media conference in Vilnius with the President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, has again reiterated Kosovo's goal for membership in NATO, the EU and the Council of Europe as soon as possible.

Osmani has said that it is absurd that within the NATO Partnership for Peace, there are anti-NATO countries such as Belarus and Serbia, but Kosovo has not received an invitation to join the Partnership.

She thanked Lithuania for the continuous support it has given to Kosovo, while she said that membership in NATO should be seen from the perspective of security.

"I believe that membership in NATO should be viewed from a security perspective. For this reason, all freedom-loving countries in Europe, who want to contribute to peace and security, deserve to be in NATO. And their aspirations for membership should be supported. I believe that not only Finland and Sweden, but also the countries in our region, such as Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, should be supported with an accelerated membership process. I say this, not only because 93 percent of Kosovo's citizens are in favor of NATO membership, but also because it has been our historical aspiration since 1999, when NATO came to our aid and stopped the genocide against our people. Today we are facing an absurd situation, where countries that are anti-NATO, such as Belarus and Serbia, are in the Partnership for Peace, and Kosovo has not yet received an invitation to join it", said Osmani at the conference.

She added that Kosovo will work with the member states and the organization to take the first step towards membership and that it also intends to meet the criteria for membership as soon as possible.

Osmani said that he understands Lithuania, as Kosovo is also in a situation where it has an aggressive neighbor.

"Unfortunately, our neighbor Serbia continues to serve Russia's interests in the region and is the only country that has not imposed sanctions on Russia and continues to serve its malignant and destabilizing agenda," Osmani said.

She added that Kosovo better than anyone understands the suffering of the Ukrainian people, as she has experienced such a thing under her skin.
