Opposition parties demand the resignation of the Rama Government and the dissolution of the Parliament

Parliament of Albania

At the session of the Albanian Parliament, Sali Berisha gave the message that the United States has lifted the sanctions against him, imposed five years ago. Deputies of the party led by Berisha called this a second blow to the Rama Government, in addition to the protests that have been taking place in the squares of Tirana for 12 days. The session demanded that the Parliament be dissolved

“I came, it was done.” This was Sali Berisha's message at Thursday's plenary session in the Albanian Parliament, through which he conveyed the message that the United States had lifted the sanctions against him, imposed five years ago.

On May 19, 2021, the US State Department banned Berisha and members of his immediate family from entering the US territory, citing involvement in widespread corruption.
Deputies from the Democratic Party, led by Berisha, said that this decision is the second blow that Edi Rama's government has received, at this time, after the protests demanding his resignation, which have been taking place in Tirana's squares for 12 days.

They complained about the lack of debate about the protest.

"Why did you deprive the deputies of the opportunity to speak about that unprecedented protest? For 11 days now, tens of thousands of young citizens have filled the square with clear demands. With 5 demands, starting with the first, the resignation of the government, the resignation of the prime minister," said Belind Këlliçi, a deputy of the Democratic Party.

And, Agron Shehaj's MP, who has repeatedly participated in protests, has demanded that the Parliament be dissolved.

"You have stolen Albanians, you have sold Albania. You have sold the interest of Albanians in these 30 years. Albanians have come out to the streets protesting against you and you are mocking them. This parliament must be dissolved as soon as possible. The people do not love you anymore. They will come to drag you away like you have done for these 35 years. You cannot continue to ignore. No more," said Shehaj.

There were also moments of tension during the session, during which security was also activated.

For 12 days, protests have been taking place in the main square in Tirana against investments in a resort project in the protected area of Vërnec, where Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, is also an investor.
