NGOs are happy with the Law that prohibits the alienation of hundreds of millions of euros from this sector to businesses

With 66 votes in favor, the Assembly of Kosovo voted today the new Law on NGOs, just as the civil society organizations themselves had requested, to prevent the alienation and manipulation of assets.

More than 30 NGOs joined in this request.

Thus, the new Law is in line with European standards and best practices.

In a press release from the Kosovo Foundation for Civil Society, it is stated that "more than five months after adopting an extremely problematic version, the Assembly of Kosovo today voted on the amendments proposed by the Office of the President of Kosovo to the Law on NGOs, in accordance with international standards and best practices and the demands of civil society".

"Since November 2018, about 300 civil society organizations had united to prevent the danger posed to the civil society sector and Kosovo's democracy by this law. After the successful request for the President of Kosovo to return this law to the Assembly for reconsideration, these organizations undertook an intensive campaign of informing all parliamentary groups regarding the problems of this unprecedented law in Europe and beyond, and the consequences that could be caused if the right provisions are not returned", says the communiqué of the KCSF and 284 non-governmental organizations part of the NGO Law initiative.

"In support of the demands of civil society, a large number of embassies of Western countries in Kosovo, the EU, international organizations and other local and international partners joined. The civil society organizations that are part of this initiative appreciate the reflection of the parliamentary political parties after the arguments of the civil society, preventing the forgiveness of hundreds of millions of euros of common wealth for private businesses and jeopardizing the future of the entire sector", the announcement further states. .

Head of state Hashim Thaçi also wrote about this. He said that the freedom of Association and the functioning of Non-Governmental Organizations is basic for the strengthening of democracy and any civil society.
