O'Brien: Vuçiqi knows well that the use of force against Kosovo puts NATO soldiers at risk

The US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, James O'Brien, has said that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, knows well that the use of any force against Kosovo is unacceptable as it puts NATO soldiers in danger.

O'Brien responded to the Serbian president's latest threat, which alluded to an invasion of Kosovo "at an appropriate moment".

During a discussion with journalists on Friday, O'Brien said that Kosovo and Serbia should reduce tensions, while he demanded responsibility for the September 24 attack in Banjska, where the policeman Afrim Bunjaku was killed.

"As for tensions, we know that the future for both countries is in the European Union and the global economy. We are working with both governments to see that this is possible. Vuçiqi is well aware that any use of force against Kosovo would be unacceptable as it endangers the NATO soldiers who are there to protect the Serbian and Albanian population. The key issue here is that the parties must reduce tensions, including those related to military exercises around the border. Accountability is needed for the September 24 attack and we expect this to happen quickly. The Serbian government has taken some steps for this. We welcome the withdrawal of military troops and cooperation in the investigation. But these are not enough", said O'Brien.

The American assistant secretary expects the Government of Kosovo to make decisions in the coming days that are in line with international demands.

"The USA is a strong supporter of Kosovo for inclusion in international organizations. In this context, what we hope to see in the coming days is that the Government of Pristina take decisions that are in line with the demands of the partners. As for the CBK's decision on the dinar, Laj@ak has come up with some specific ideas. We see that in the north it is very difficult for people to buy everyday things. The regulation was implemented in a way that makes life difficult for Serbs. Friends of Kosovo are asking for a review of the implementation that allows people to pay for everyday things", added O'Brien.

He considered the initiation of energy billing in the north as a "serious deal".

"So what we want to see is practical progress. Nationalist rhetoric should also be stopped", O'Brien declared.

O'Brien, just like earlier the US emissary for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has made it clear that for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe, it must move forward with the establishment of the Association.

"Kosovo needs votes in the process for membership in the Council of Europe, which has several conditions that must be met. One of them has been the progress in settling the property of the Monastery of Deçan. It took a long time but it was implemented. Likewise, Kosovo should move forward with the establishment of the Association before the Council of Europe decides on membership", emphasized O'Brien.

O'Brien and Escobar have held a conference with journalists to provide details of the last meeting of the envoys of Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy for the Western Balkans.
