Students in the AI ​​era are learning with the first curriculum in a decade

The Core Curriculum of Education in Kosovo continues to remain unchanged, despite the major transformations that have occurred in the social and technological context over the past 10 years. Education experts say that the way of learning has changed significantly, but the content and approach in schools have lagged behind these developments. The Core Education Curriculum has not kept up with the changes that have occurred over the past 10 years in society and technology.

It has been in effect since August 2016, and students learn based on it, although many things have changed. Now, many countries around the world have also integrated the artificial intelligence (AI) component.

Education experts say that the way of learning has evolved, but the basic content of teaching in schools has not followed the same pace of change.

Education expert Ismet Potera says that what is taught in the classroom does not always match the pace at which the world outside is developing.

"The consequences or problems of this are that children and students encounter some opposition, perhaps with new discoveries or changes that occur in science or society. And now in the curriculum they learn something else because they are outdated. 10 years is a lot more than today's developments, so this can also present monotony to children, 'What do we need to teach these things when they have changed?'" says Potera.

Meanwhile, Xhavit Rexhaj, who was Deputy Minister of Education, says that technological developments have also changed the way knowledge is produced and transmitted.

"Knowledge is outdated, both information and methodology. For example, 10 years ago there was no artificial intelligence. Now there is artificial intelligence. 10 years ago, textbooks were not digitized. Now they are. That is, both in methodology, in content, and in the general context, there are so many changes that it was necessary to take them into account and modify the curriculum and syllabus to reflect the doubts," said Rexhaj.

According to him, today's students often use technology in ways that are not always appropriate, including copying.

"Teachers who teach the curriculum take into account all the changes. They use new tools, new approaches, they use them themselves, both to assess students, to give tests, and to prepare the lesson, they use Chat tools. So, people keep up, but the state needs to integrate it with the curriculum as it should, because now, for example, there are cases when children use Chat with copies, and the curriculum would regulate the way of using technologies and new approaches to new developments," said Rexhaj.

The need for curriculum review and adaptation is also emphasized by the vice president of the Kosovo Parents' Council, Linda Dula-Halilabazi.

"The curriculum had to be reviewed, adapted to the needs and developments of the time. Yes, parents have complaints from time to time about the content of the curriculum, namely the textbooks. Children are increasingly being taught to copy from the use of technology, no matter how much the school tries to teach them to use it to help and develop the knowledge they have already learned," she said.

The need for changes to this curriculum has been discussed this year, 10 years after its revision. In January of this year, former Minister of Education, Arbërie Nagavci, formed a commission to review subject curricula.

One of the members of this commission, Selim Mehmeti, said that in the last meeting, the course of action was discussed and it was envisaged to prepare a work plan for review after it was approved by the cabinet of Minister Hajrulla Çeku, but with the country going to elections, there was no continuity of the working commission.

The Core Curriculum of Education was last revised in August 2016.
