The process of closing the Detention Center in Gjilan begins, it will be used by Denmark

The Chamber of Advocates said it was notified by the Kosovo Correctional Service that

This facility will be used within the framework of the agreement for prisoners from the Kingdom of Denmark.

"The Kosovo Bar Association has been officially notified by the Kosovo Correctional Service that the process of closing the Gjilan Detention Center has begun, within the framework of the implementation of the Treaty between the Republic of Kosovo and the Kingdom of Denmark on the use of this facility for the execution of sentences imposed by the Danish authorities. According to the official announcement, the gradual transfer of persons deprived of liberty from the Gjilan Detention Center to other correctional institutions has already begun, a process that will be carried out in phases, in accordance with security assessments, accommodation capacities and operational needs of the Kosovo Correctional Service," the announcement states.

The Chamber of Advocates has said that it is issuing the notice with the aim of informing the legal community in a timely manner and facilitating communication with clients during this transitional period.

Kosovo and Denmark signed a 10-year agreement in 2022 for the transfer of prisoners from the Nordic country. The agreement foresees that Denmark will rent 300 prison cells in Gjilan, while Kosovo will benefit from over 200 million euros.

According to the agreement, prisoners to be transferred from Denmark to Kosovo must not have been convicted of serious crimes for over 10 years and must not have mental problems.

The plan had met with opposition in Denmark, and was even suspended for a time due to allegations of human rights violations.
