From the beginning of the year, 56 people in the Municipality of Peja requested the removal of their citizenship

Even on Friday, the citizenship counter in the Peja Municipality Office was not without work, which accepted several requests for release from Kosovo citizenship.

Among them was a family of several members, who refused to talk about the reasons. Another immigrant, who applied after them, showed behind the camera that he is forced to choose one citizenship, due to the law in the country where he lives.

These are not the only ones who have been marked this year in the official book of the redemption of Kosovo's citizenship.

The Head of the Office in Peja, Shefqet Thaqi, says that from the beginning of the year until Friday, 56 people have applied for release from citizenship, 16 of them in July alone.

"Now the number of cases for application for release from the citizenship of Kosovo has almost increased. While we expect that even this week and in the month of August, the requests will be more numerous", he said.

Requests for release from citizenship were submitted by emigrants from several countries, but currently, as the citizenship official indicated, the requests of emigrants from two European countries dominate.

"Since the influx of incoming emigrants has started, we usually have Germany among the main countries that definitely beg to lose their citizenship. And the state of Norway has started one of them. Until this year, Norway did not have many requests, but now Norway has also started", declared Adelina Kajtazi, citizenship officer in the Municipality of Peja.

The current number of our compatriots in exile who are renouncing their Kosovo citizenship, for the civil society in Peja, is not as scary as it will be in the coming years.

According to the civil society in Peja, this is related to the increasing migration of the citizens of Peja, which has been happening in recent years, who are also expected to give up their Kosovo citizenship later.

"Unfortunately, it is increasing and I believe it has been increasing in other years, especially for the part of citizens who are now migrating abroad with different professions", said Qenan Bardhaj from the NGO "Syri i Vizioni".

Since 2009, when the application for release from citizenship began, according to official data, at least 3 emigrants from Peja have renounced their citizenship.

But this number is not real, based on the fact that in order to be released from the citizenship of Kosovo, emigrants also apply to the Embassies of Kosovo and the Office of Peja does not possess those data.
