In 14 years, 58 women have been killed in Kosovo by their husbands, ex-husbands or family members. Three have happened in the past year alone.
Aggravated murder in Kosovo is punishable by a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment. This measure has been imposed by the courts in three cases, while one was overturned by the Court of Appeals.
Justice and security experts have assessed the sentences for those accused of murdering women as largely lenient and delayed.
This, according to lawyer Anton Nrecaj, constitutes a failure of justice institutions.
"We have two decisions of the Constitutional Court, which has ruled regarding the failure of institutions to protect victims of domestic violence. In one case, we have when the Court failed to offer protection to the victim and the other case is when the Police did not offer protection to the victim," said Ndrecaj.

And to prevent murders, security expert Arben Dashevci sees it as necessary to toughen criminal sanctions for perpetrators.
"They are worrying, they cause concern among the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo and definitely for these people who commit these cases that I call macabre and quite terrible, criminal sanctions should be toughened for them, always for prevention and always for prevention so that these cases are reduced to the minimum possible," said Dashevci.
For the murder of a 43-year-old woman in Peja in April 2024, the Basic Court of Peja has sentenced her husband to life imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty. This measure was also imposed by the Appeals Court on the murderer of 18-year-old Marigona Osmani from Ferizaj, Dardan Krivaqa.
The life sentence of the accused for the murder of Donjeta Pajazitaj was overturned by the Court of Appeal and he is free.

Finally, the Basic Prosecution Office in Pristina filed an indictment against Naim Murseli for the murder of his wife, Liridona Ademaj, and the process against him is still ongoing.
The case of the murder of 21-year-old Erona Cokli in April 2024, for which the Ferizaj Basic Court has filed an indictment against her ex-husband, is also in court. However, the court hearing has been postponed indefinitely, because a psychiatric examination order has been issued against the defendant Valon Aliu.
