Water shortage endangers dialysis service at the QMF in Kodra e Trimave

The lack of water is jeopardizing the provision of hemodialysis at the Family Medicine Center in Kodra e Trimave. Last week, several patients were left without treatment, while the UCCK confirmed that it was forced to accept patients to continue dialysis at the Nephrology Clinic.

Water supply problems during the summer season are jeopardizing the functioning of the hemodialysis service at the Family Medicine Center in Kodra e Trimave.

As a result of frequent water interruptions, patients who receive dialysis every day may be left without treatment.

Last week, according to KOHA sources, some patients returned unable to receive treatment due to a lack of water.

And according to the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, this has only happened once.

"In only one case, some patients were transferred to UCCK to continue treatment until the defects were eliminated," UCCK said.

According to health workers at this medical center, their requests for a permanent solution have not been taken into account by the UCCK for several years now.

One of them, on condition of anonymity, said that just one dialysis session requires about 5 liters of water.

He said that previously, the center had a large water tank, but it was removed after it became contaminated during its stay.

"Imagine not having water and dialysis not functioning due to its lack; this is death for us. With 25 thousand or 30 thousand euros this work would have been done. We had the tank, but we removed it, because it was contaminated during the period when the facility was renovated by the municipality. During the time that the water did not circulate, it was contaminated. Whether it was well insulated or not, I do not know, as I am not an expert. We cleaned it, we put chemicals on it, but it did not work for us (it had no effect), so we eliminated it," says a health worker. 

Currently, two small water tanks with a capacity of 2 thousand liters each are installed in this center.

"The problem occurs in cases of power outages at the water processing plant, the difficulty is related to the supply of pressurized water during the summer season, when consumption is very high and expenses are high. SHSKUK, in cooperation with QKUK, plans to build a space for the installation of two water tanks with a capacity of 20.000 liters, after obtaining permission from the Municipality of Pristina," QKUK said.

KOHA has sent questions to the Municipality of Pristina to find out whether it has received any request from the UCCK to issue a permit, but as of the time of the story's broadcast, it has not received a response.

At the Family Medicine Center in Kodra e Trimave, hemodialysis service is offered from Monday to Saturday, in three work shifts.
