The University of Pristina has registered about 1,000 more applications for bachelor's studies compared to last year. More than 7,000 candidates have competed for over 5,600 places. Graduates have shown the greatest interest in the Medicine and Computer and Software Engineering programs. Little interest has been shown again in the Mathematical-Natural Sciences programs and the programs of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine.
The University of Pristina has received about a thousand more applications for enrollment in study programs this year compared to last year.
The highest interest among graduates has been shown in the Medicine programs, where five graduates have applied for a free study place in this academic unit. Computer and Software Engineering has also aroused the interest of young people.
The Vice-Rector for Institutional Development, Quality and Student Affairs, Majlinda Gjelaj, announced that the Faculty of Medicine alone has received over 2,100 applications for 462 vacant positions.
"In bachelor's studies we will accept over 5,600 students, while this year there is a greater increase than last year in applications from high school graduates who this year have applied for around 7,100 applicants for bachelor's studies. As in previous years, the greatest interest has been in the University of Pristina, and the interest continues to be in studying at the Faculty of Medicine, specifically in this academic unit over 2.100 applicants have applied, who aim to become health professionals," said Vice-Rector Gjelaj.
According to her, little interest has been shown for the Agriculture and Veterinary programs, as well as for some programs in the Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

"There is a decline in interest in studying in the Agriculture and Veterinary programs. We are working through several internal quality mechanisms to reform the programs, which are not of much interest to young people today, despite the fact that the labor market has a great need to have qualified veterinarians and agronomists at UP", said Vice-Rector Gjelaj. "There is a decline in interest at a global level in studying in the natural sciences. For the number of positions that we have announced, it seems that there are enough applications to make the necessary groups, according to the UP regulation".
But education expert Ismet Potera believes that the lack of interest in natural sciences is also related to the way they are taught in schools.
"The matura and achievement tests themselves are showing that the results are not satisfactory in these subjects. So this is probably also related to how we teach these sciences and how we approach these sciences in school. Here we need to think more deeply about whether these sciences are really that difficult to master or whether changes should be made in the approach of teachers or in the faculty programs. It is a bit paradoxical how these subjects are the least liked by students while in other countries they are the subjects with the most perspective," said Potera.
This year, the University of Pristina has also received applications from 15 young people from the Arbëresh communities of Italy, the Arbëresh communities of Zadar, the Albanians of Turkey, and members of the diaspora originating from Kosovo.
The competition for admission of students at the bachelor's and master's level was opened on June 29 by the largest public university in Kosovo, and closed on Tuesday, July 7.
Based on it, this university will enroll 5663 full-time students in the first year of basic - bachelor's studies, in the first term of the competition for the academic year 2026/2027.
All candidates who have successfully completed upper secondary education and passed the State Matura exam were eligible to apply for admission to basic studies. The university will enroll up to 12 percent, or 659 full-time students from the non-majority community. The 12 percent quota of places reserved for enrollment of students from the non-majority community will be distributed proportionally, according to the percentage of the total number of students for each department or program of the faculties separately.

At the university, based on the quotas set by the Ministry of Education, within the total number of students, up to 2 percent, respectively up to 115 candidates from Presheva, Bujanovac and Medveđa, up to 2 percent, respectively up to 116 from North Macedonia and the Republic of Albania, and up to 1 percent, respectively up to 71 candidates from Montenegro, can be admitted.
By decision of the Senate, and with the approval of the Ministry, UP, within the total number of students, has offered quotas of reserved places to members of the Arbëresh community of Italy and the Arbëresh community of Zadar up to 1 percent, respectively up to 64 candidates, to Albanians of Turkey up to 1 percent, respectively up to 62 candidates, and to Albanian immigrants originating from Kosovo up to 2 percent, respectively up to 112 candidates.

Matura exam: The maximum number of points is 100 points: Success in high school up to 30 points; Success in Matura up to 30 points and; Success in the entrance exam up to 40 points.
The entrance exam will not be held on the same day in all faculties.
Based on the competition, on Wednesday it was organized in the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Mathematical-Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, as well as the Faculty of Architecture.
