The acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has promised candidate country status and the opening of negotiations for membership in the European Union, for the "next mandate".
In his congratulations on Europe Day, Kurti said that this is something that Kosovo has long deserved.

Kurti said that the EU was born on the ruins of World War II and at a time when the need for peace had become existential. He said that peace was not built on oblivion, recalling the creation of common European institutions.
In this case, he said that Kosovo, by contrast, experienced genocide and the European project still remains only an unfinished promise.
"Meanwhile, Kosovo lived the twentieth century differently. In addition to two world wars and the terrible Balkan wars, we also experienced the Serbian genocide at its beginning and end. For us, the European project remained an unfinished promise of peace until the end of the century. Precisely for this reason, the membership in the European Union of the Western Balkan countries that want to join is not simply a matter of prosperity and well-being. It is a necessity to ensure lasting peace in Europe," he added.
