The return of "Ilaz Kodra" to a one-way street provokes a reaction from citizens in Pristina

New speed bumps have been installed on the road, and traffic police are often present to inform citizens. The municipality has announced that the change was made after the completion of infrastructure works and repairs in this area. However, some residents are opposing this decision of the municipality. According to traffic experts, one-way streets are a well-known tool in traffic management, but they are rarely sufficient as a sole solution.

Citizens moving from the upper part of "Ilaz Kodra" street towards "28 Nëntori" street or the "Lakrishte" neighborhood in Pristina have been facing a change in traffic for a week now, as it has returned to one-way traffic.

New speed bumps have been placed on the road, and traffic police are often present to inform citizens. 

The municipality has announced that the change was made following the completion of infrastructure works and repairs in this area.

However, some residents are opposing this decision of the Municipality.

Nexhat Shoshka from the "Dardania" neighborhood said that this change has increased traffic congestion and drivers are being forced to take longer routes.

"I swear, it seems to me that they are a joke. You see these people on bicycles coming and going, it seems stupid to me, because it is 60 to 100 meters to the circle, and now these people with cars have to be brought around to the bus station. We go there on foot, it seems to me that a joke, this is my opinion. Because since there is no space and the place is narrow, it is possible that even the bicycle trucks that come and go are in their space," said Shoshka.

Citizens have also reacted through social media, criticizing the road's transformation into a wasteland.

And according to traffic expert Selman Kolgeci, one-way streets are a well-known tool in urban traffic management, but they are rarely sufficient as the only solution.

“Road changes (such as one-way streets) are often tactical measures to improve the existing situation, but they do not address the main source of the problem: the large number of private vehicles. Investing in reliable, frequent and comfortable public transport is the most effective way to reduce the load on the roads. The ideal is a combination: improving the road network (including one-way streets where necessary) and a serious push towards sustainable alternatives. One-way streets can be a reasonable and normal step in traffic management, especially when applied carefully and in a tested manner. But they should not be seen as the only solution”, said Kolgeci.

Last year, the municipality decided to turn this road into a two-way road, due to works under Kurriz.
