Chief Prosecutor Gashi: It is suspected that there are other bodies of war victims in the mass graves in Zubin-Potok

Chief State Prosecutor Zejnulla Gashi has said that in the mass graves discovered in Zubin-Potok, where mortal remains were discovered, it is suspected that there are other bodies of victims belonging to the last war in Kosovo. 

Gashi assessed that the discovery of these mass graves is a state effort and commitment to uncovering the truth and establishing justice. 

The shedding of light on these cases, according to him, constitutes an institutional and legal obligation towards the victims and their families who have been waiting for years for answers about the fate of their loved ones.

"The Chief State Prosecutor highly appreciates the professional work, dedication and commitment of all law enforcement institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, which are involved in the case of the discovery of mass graves in the municipality of Zubin Potok, where mortal remains were found and it is suspected that there are other bodies of victims belonging to the last war in Kosovo," reads a statement from Gashi, sent to the media.

The Chief State Prosecutor is said to appreciate the presence of all institutions and citizens at the scene where the mortal remains were found. "The contribution and cooperation of each person have been and remain essential for the clarification of these cases, as well as for the identification of the responsible persons involved in the commission of these crimes in order for them to face justice," the announcement states.

Acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, said that after the discovery of mortal remains in a mass grave in Kalludra, Zubin Potok, on Sunday, another mass grave with mortal remains of victims of the last war in Kosovo was found in the village of Jabukë of this municipality.

The Kosovo Police and the Special Prosecution Office have also announced the discovery of mortal remains at this location. The Prosecution Office has said that it will submit a request to the Basic Court in Pristina for permission to exhume and conduct the necessary examinations. 

"In accordance with the legal provisions in force, the Special Prosecution will submit a request to the Basic Court in Pristina for permission to exhume and conduct the necessary examinations," the joint statement from the Kosovo Police and Prosecution reads. 

A day earlier, acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, during a visit to the village of Kalludër, said that the excavations could take months, due to the dispersion of the remains and the difficult terrain. This village in Zubin Potok is suspected to contain the remains of 23 Albanian civilians from Mitrovica, known as the “group of intellectuals”. They were kidnapped on April 19, 1999. Now, 27 years later, their fate has not been revealed.
