The Central Election Commission in Kosovo has announced that 28 political subjects have applied for certification for participation in the parliamentary elections. In this institution, they announced that candidates who have been sentenced by a final court decision to one or more years of effective imprisonment will not be able to be certified as candidates for the parliamentary elections, which will be held on February 9.
The Central Election Commission will cooperate with three institutions in the process of verifying candidates for election certification.
The spokesperson of the CEC, Valmir Elezi, announced on Thursday that no candidate will be able to compete as a deputy of the Assembly of Kosovo, in case he is sentenced by a final court decision to one or more years of imprisonment effective.
In order to implement Article 30 of the Law on General Elections, Elezi has said that the competent institutions will be required to make the necessary verifications for the suitability or ability of the candidates to be certified.
"This article stipulates that a person who has been convicted in the last three (3) years by a final court decision for a criminal offense, with one or more years of effective imprisonment, cannot be certified as a candidate, therefore with the aim of verification, we have asked the Judicial Council of Kosovo to send us the names of persons from the list of candidates if they have been convicted in the last 3 years by a final court decision for a criminal offense, with one or more years effective imprisonment", said Elezi.
According to him, candidates for the Assembly cannot be even the persons who are functionaries with a special status according to the Law on Public Officials.

For this, Elezi said that they will coordinate with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Article 30 of the Law on General Elections provides that a candidate cannot be a person who is an official with a special status based on the Law in force on Public Officials or a member of the foreign service and diplomatic representative. In order to make the necessary verifications for these legal restrictions, we will cooperate with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora", he said.
According to the law, officials of the Electoral Panel for Complaints and Submissions, as well as the chairman or members of the CEC and those of the municipal Election Commissions, cannot be potential candidates.
The CEC must confirm the lists by December 25 at the latest.
Elezi has announced that the drawing of lots for the ranking of political subjects on the ballot will take place on January 7.
From September 1 to December 11, 28 political entities applied for representation in the Assembly of Kosovo. Of them, 20 are political parties, five coalitions, two civic initiatives and one independent candidate.

Four parties have not submitted their candidate lists to the CEC.
Parliamentary elections will be held on February 9.
