Over 92 percent of Kosovo's citizens would vote for membership in the European Union if a referendum were held today, and 94 percent of citizens would vote to join NATO, according to a survey conducted by the International Institute. Republican.
The poll has shown a strong desire to join the EU and NATO and strong support for a democratic government. But there are also growing concerns about growing tensions with Serbia.
"The people of Kosovo believe that economic progress and national security come with close ties to the West," said Paul McCarthy, IRI's European director. "Membership in the EU and NATO will help to achieve these goals."
95 percent of adults surveyed believe that democracy is the best possible form of government for Kosovo. The survey also showed that 92 percent believe that it is very or to a certain extent important for women to be involved in political decision-making.
"The data shows that people are eager to participate in national and local elections in 2025. It is also important for them to see women and young people represented in the political process," said McCarthy.
The citizens of Kosovo are also worried about the tensions with Serbia, it was said in the survey.
Compared to a survey conducted in March 2023, the percentage of respondents who are very or somewhat concerned that tensions with Serbia will develop into a larger conflict has increased by 17 percentage points.
The survey was conducted from May 6 to May 27, 2024.
