Kos: We will not follow the trends for territory exchange between Kosovo and Serbia

Marta Kos

The candidate for Commissioner of the European Union Enlargement, the Slovenian Marta Kos, has said that she is against the tendencies to exchange territory between Kosovo and Serbia and that a new path should be sought in the dialogue process if it is seen that the path so far does not give results. She said this in a hearing at the Foreign Policy Committee of the European Parliament where she must be confirmed as the next commissioner.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who has also received a five-year mandate, entrusted the enlargement process to the former Kos diplomat. These days, 26 candidates for commissioners are going through the hearing and confirmation process in the parliamentary committees.

Kos has said that the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia will be in the hands of the high representative, Kaja Kallas, but that given her experience and knowledge of the region, she will be ready to cooperate in this field in order to moves forward.

"We have to move forward. It has been very formally achieved so far in the dialogue. We have an agreement on the path towards the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. We expect Kosovo and Serbia to continue with implementation. If things don't work out, we have to find a new way. In the sense of Einstein's saying that insanity is to keep doing the same thing every day expecting different results - I want to see different results. I am sure that there is a way when there is a will", she said.

Asked what she expects from the role of the Trump administration in the region and about the ideas of exchanging territory between Kosovo and Serbia, if those ideas come back, Kos said that she will not follow such ideas.
