The Judicial Council announces the competition for the election of the new chairman

The Judicial Council has decided to start the procedures for the election of the new chairman. This competition has been opened three weeks before the end of the mandate of the current chairman, Albert Zogaj, who has not indicated whether he aims for another term

The Judicial Council of Kosovo has announced the competition for the selection of the new chairman, when three weeks remain until the end of the mandate of the current chairman, Albert Zogaj. The decision was taken at the Council meeting held on Friday. But before announcing it, the KJC has requested an opinion from the Legal Office.

"We have the explanatory memo as material necessary for information. What is important for the procedure, since we also have the media, the Legal Office prepares the decision on the conditions and application procedure", said Zogaj.

Among the conditions that candidates must meet is that they must be judicial members of the Council and must secure at least three signatures from other members of the Council. Asked if he will run for re-election, chairman Zogaj said that the issue of re-election is personal and that it is still too early to talk about it.

The Law on the Judicial Council determines the 5-year mandate for the members without the possibility of re-election.

Meanwhile, the chairman limits this mandate to 3 years. After the end of his mandate as chairman, Zogaj will have another year and eight months of mandate as a member of the KJC. He will have the possibility of re-election, even if he can leave the mandate in half due to the legal time limit as a member of the KJC.

This space was left with the Regulation on the Organization and Activity of the KJC, since it did not include the proposal that the re-election of the chairperson is not allowed, as is usually done with the chairpersons of courts who do not have the right to re-election. The regulation stipulates that the process of selecting the chairman should not exceed one month from the vacant position.
