(Updated 10:45) - The Minister of the Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, announced on Thursday that he has decided to extend the deadline until August 23 for the conversion of driver's licenses issued by Serbian parallel structures in Kosovo.
According to the decision of the Ministry of Interior, the deadline for the conversion of illegal driver's licenses would end on August 9. But due to the "numerous demands of the citizens" as well as the "request for extension of the deadline" from the Police, Sveçla said that there was consideration.
"After August 23, for all those who do not convert their driver's license, action will be taken according to the relevant legislation in force", Sveçla wrote on Facebook.
As of August 7, 5588 Serbs have applied to convert illegal drivers' licenses to RKS.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has decided since May 9 of this year to allow Serbs to convert illegal driver's licenses to RKS with some facilities, since they will not be subject to the driver's license exam.
The procedure for equipment with a driver's license of the Republic of Kosovo lasts fifteen days. The driver's license issued by the Serbian structures is returned to the applicant as an invalid document and the same is equipped with the driver's license of the Republic of Kosovo.
Postponement of the deadline for conversion of illegal driver's license to RKS is requested
- 10:20 - The Deputy Director of Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, has said that they will ask the Ministry of the Interior to postpone the deadline for five or ten days for the conversion of driver's licenses issued by Serbian parallel structures in Kosovo.
According to Elshan, the process has gone well so far, but there have been some technical problems.
"We have requested from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, that both the license plates and car licenses be converted, and the process of converting the plates has been completed, while the process of converting driver's licenses is underway. We have some technical issues and we see people having those issues. For example, someone has a technical problem - driving ban for three months, and this ban goes after August 9. We will see if we can send a request to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to allow us to extend this for five or ten working days, due to these difficulties", said Elshani.
