Kallasi gives no signs that he will prioritize the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue

Kaja kallas

During the three-hour debate, Kallasi only mentioned the dialogue when answering the last question about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The candidate to succeed Josep Borrell, Kaja Kallas has not given any signs that she will consider the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia as a priority, even though it is expected that she will decide on the approach that the European Union will have towards this process. Today, the future head of EU diplomacy answered for three hours the questions of the deputies of the European Parliament in the Foreign Policy Committee in the session where she must be confirmed in the new position.

Almost no part of the world remained unmentioned, either in her speech or in the many questions of the deputies, except for the Western Balkans. This region was mentioned only in the general aspect of the need for concrete results in the expansion process, for which Kallasi has said that he will be committed.

At the very end of the debate, the question addressed to Kallas was about Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this was done by Croatian MP Zheljana Zovko. Only in the answer to this question, Kallasi mentioned the dialogue as one of the two paths through which they will work in the Western Balkans region.

"The Western Balkans is a very important region and very close to our borders. We have two paths to work there, the first is the expansion where we have to work with the commissioner for expansion. As you said earlier, we really need to have a story of success in the next five years because this is not only for the prosperity of the region, but also to give hope to the region", she said.

"The second path is the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue where all my predecessors have invested a lot of time to bring stability to the region", was all Kallasi said about the dialogue in the session that lasted more than three hours.

Kallasi said that the expansion of the European Union should be seen as a strategic process which strengthens the EU and brings benefit to the countries aiming for membership. She stated that it is necessary to have concrete results in expansion in the next five years and promised that she will engage in cooperation with the expansion commissioner so that this becomes a reality.
