Ilir Meta remains in prison, the court rejects the request of his lawyers

Ilir Meta

The Special Court for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) has once again rejected the request of the former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, for the relaxation of the security measure, leaving his prison arrest in effect, reports "Euronews Albana".

Although SPAK communicated the closure of the investigations and the case will go to trial, the president of the Freedom Party will continue to remain in prison until a new decision, after Judge Erjon Çela upheld the arrest order against him.

Lawyer Kujtim Cakrani left the session with the argument that the judge is not independent.

Meta had requested to be released from prison with the argument that the investigations against him have now been closed and the case has been sent to trial.

The former president is accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, for matters related to the SMI lobbying file in the US and the CEZ-DIA affair.
