Hoti: KEDS's management of the electricity situation is unacceptable

Former Democratic League of Kosovo MP Avdullah Hoti has described the electricity situation in Kosovo as serious.

In a Facebook post, he wrote that on Saturday the electricity situation in many villages of Rahovec and the city was severe. He added that there was no supply for hours, claiming that the same situation was also in other regions.

"We have continuously raised this problem, but the situation is not improving. Total irresponsibility. The management of the situation by KEDS is unacceptable. In these winter days, the uncertainty of electricity supply disrupts any family planning for the end of the year holidays. Businesses are forced to stop work or work with increased costs," he wrote.

Hoti said that in all these years the energy sector has been terribly poorly managed.

According to him, five years without any new energy capacity, stating that projects initiated by previous governments have been discontinued, creating the ground for enormous imports of electricity.

"The Washington Agreement was not implemented and, consequently, the gas-fired power plant was not built. The contract for the construction of the "Kosova e Re" power plant was canceled and the state was forced to pay a 20 million euro penalty. The price of electricity increased several times, increasing the cost of living for citizens.  "The release of businesses into the open energy market without creating the necessary conditions has led to around 1000 companies being supplied with energy at around three times the price they paid before. This has resulted in increased production costs for businesses, which have been passed on to product prices, thus increasing the cost of the basket for citizens," he wrote.

According to him, this entire situation has caused energy imports this year to be close to 1 billion euros, which were paid by citizens and businesses through increased energy tariffs.

"How can this situation be justified? Who has an interest in blocking the development of the energy sector in Kosovo? Why were the projects of previous governments interrupted? Why were tariffs increased three times? Why were businesses put on the open market without the necessary preparations? Why were they put on the open market now? These are issues that must be answered and will be answered," he said.
