Haxhiu in Mitrovica for the missing: The main problem continues to be Serbia

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu visited today the Association of Families of the Missing in Mitrovica, where she met with family members of persons who disappeared forcibly during the war.

It is known that during the meeting she listened closely to the concerns and requests of families who are still waiting for answers about the fate of their loved ones.

Haxhiu emphasized that the country's institutions have an obligation to continue their commitment to clarifying the fate of missing persons, but the main obstacle in this process, according to her, remains the lack of cooperation from Serbia. 

"In the Municipality of Mitrovica, there are still 104 forcibly disappeared persons, whose fate the families have no information about. This is a serious wound for the families, for Mitrovica and for the entire Republic of Kosovo. The main problem continues to be Serbia, which is not providing the necessary information about the fate of the forcibly disappeared persons. We will address the requests of the families and mothers who are still waiting for an answer to the responsible institutions. This issue must remain at the center of institutional work," she said.

Police announced on Wednesday that the remains of at least two people believed to belong to those missing during the recent war in Kosovo were found on Tuesday in Mitrovica.

"By court order, excavation was carried out and the remains of at least two persons missing during the last war were found, who are believed to belong to the national list of persons forcibly disappeared during the 1998-1999 war period," the 24-hour Police report states.
After completing the procedures at the scene, the skeletal remains were brought to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for medical examination and confirmation of identity through DNA analysis.
