Haxhiu dismisses the head of the mission to the Vatican, Vehbi Miftari

Vehbi Miftari

The Head of Mission to the Holy See in the Vatican, Vehbi Miftari, has announced that he has received the decree for his release from this duty from the acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu.

He thanked former President Vjosa Osmani for her trust in appointing him to this position. Miftari also said that this means the end of this commitment but not the others for Kosovo.

"This decree marks the end of my mandate in the Vatican. Certainly not my commitment to the Republic, which I have served with dedication every time, without ever seeking retribution."  It has been the honor of a lifetime that I have been given, being the first head of the Mission to the Vatican.  Today, I return happy that not only the mission, but also the relationships are fully consolidated.  "I thank President Osmani for her trust, each of you for your support, and the Holy See for the love with which it welcomed me and offered me cooperation," Miftari wrote in the announcement on his Facebook page.

Miftari was also an advisor to former President Vjosa Osmani.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has refused to call the dismissal of the head of the Mission to the Vatican, Vehbi Miftari, a dismissal. She announced that the procedures for his removal began in 2025.

Haxhiu said that he has received a large number of cases from former President Vjosa Osmani and has continued with the procedures where everything was in order.

"I wouldn't call it a dismissal. Every return from a diplomatic mission is not a dismissal. In diplomacy, there are appointments, returns and rotations and there is a need for the foreign service to function according to the law and the needs of the state. As for Mr. Miftari, the procedure for his release began in 2025. I inherited a large number of cases in relation to these issues. I inherited them from President Osmani and where everything was in order in relation to the procedures, I will continue them. There have been 8 appointments, three releases and two reorganizations of consular missions," she said at a press conference on Thursday, after setting the date for the next elections.
