Haxhiu seeks international reaction to Vučić's threat to change the course of the Ibar River

The acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has called the threat of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, to change the course of the Ibar River a serious concern and needs to be addressed.

A day ago, Vučić stated that he had also invited experts on this issue.

Haxhiu, during the organization of the ninth edition of the Conference of Kosovo Ambassadors, said that diplomats should speak about this serious threat from Serbia towards Kosovo, in the countries where they serve.

"Unilateral intervention in transboundary watercourses would have consequences far beyond a technical issue, as it would affect the water, energy, environmental and human security of our Republic. For this reason, our diplomats should make these statements known in the capitals where they serve and inform the governments of the host countries about the nature and consequences of this absurd and threatening idea. We must make it clear that the use of water resources as an instrument of pressure on Kosovo is unacceptable and that such ideas that arouse chauvinistic and destabilizing approaches towards Kosovo should receive appropriate international attention and response," Haxhiu said.

Haxhiu also spoke about the excavations taking place at the Zubin Potok sites. She said that diplomats should also be in communication with the institutions of the countries where they serve. 

"For our diplomats, this should be an ongoing issue of communication with the governments and institutions of the countries where they serve. Our partners should know that even today in Kosovo new evidence of war crimes is being found and that justice for the victims and their families is still awaiting answers. Therefore, pressure should be put on Serbia to open the archives," Haxhiu declared.

A few days ago, the presence of mortal remains was identified and confirmed at the third suspected location in Zubin-Potok during the continuation of investigations into the war crimes case.

The demand for Serbia to open its archives, in order to shed light on the fate of around 1600 missing persons, has been reactivated precisely after three mass graves were discovered in Zubin-Potok in just over a week.

The European Union has also requested that Serbia fully implement the commitments of the Declaration on Missing Persons.

Through the declaration, in 2023, the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, had agreed in dialogue to clarify the fate of those who disappeared forcibly during the war.
